Background
The training materials on this web page were produced by the Michigan Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP), Michigan Tech University, Houghton, MI through funding provided by the FHWA Office of Safety, FHWA T2 and Innovation Program, and the Michigan LTAP.

Introduction
These training materials are intended to provide more than enough material to conduct a one-day training session. The target audience is non-engineers from all backgrounds, and can include elected officials, law enforcement officers, municipal workers, safety advocacy groups, and members of the general public. Engineers that do not have a background in traffic safety may also benefit from the course; however, the material may fall below their learning expectations. The greatest benefit for engineers in attending this workshop is being present during the instruction to hear questions, concerns and comments from people in the community that they serve. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on the "non engineering audience" working together with engineers and other transportation officials to make their safety program a success.

Intent of the Workshop
The materials provide non-engineers with 1) A basic understanding of intersection safety issues, 2) "How to" information for common safety tasks that do not require an engineer, and 3) Background information on safety tasks that DO require an engineer. This workshop also outlines areas where non-engineers can assist traffic engineers in the safety process, and help them to understand when an engineer needs to be consulted to make a safety related change at an intersection. This workshop is only intended to address existing roads; proposed roads are not considered because it is assumed that an engineer will be involved in design and planning of those. This program is not intended to make traffic engineers out of the general public.

Files can be downloaded individually or as a package in the attached zip file. The "Leaders Guide" provides information on setting up and marketing the workshop as well as how to use the resources contained in these files.
